LUMUS

pronounced loo-muhs

(n):

the poignant humanness beneath the spectacle of society

lumus is derived from the latin lumen + humus. lumen is light and brightness. humus is a particularly rich and dark component of soil, made of decayed organic matter.

I love language, so when I came across The Dictionary for Obscure Sorrows, I was captivated by John Koenig's creative and meaningful portrayal of emotion. I knew that I wanted my therapy practice to hold a name that invites a sense of groundedness while also being a guiding light forward.

In most cultures, we are often asked to wear a mask to fit in society's box. Sometimes, being inside this box is safe and offers us opportunities that we would never have before. Other times, the box feels confining, trapping us into an identity that doesn’t match our soul.

There are constructed ideals around us, and sometimes, we are distracted by the concept that society’s norm is the one & only reality. However, at the heart of each of us is…Self. We all hold realities that are true to us and only us. That poignant humanity is what I hope to help you uncover, dive deeper into, or understand more clearly.
